Anthony's music has been performed by Ensemble Recherche (Germany), Les Cris de Paris (France), the Contemporary Chamber Players (New York), Ensemble Cairn (France), L’Orchestre de la Francophonie Canadienne (Canada), Ensemble Moderne Academie (Germany), Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (Quebec), the New Orford String Quartet (Canada), Toca Loca (Canada), and the Rubbing Stone Ensemble (Canada).
Awards include the 2011 Giga-Hertz Prize for Electronic Music from the ZKM and Experimental Studio (Germany), International Competition for live-electronics of the Hamburg Klangwerktage (Germany), and the Gold medal in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada). He has also presented his music at the International Computer Music Conference (2009 and 2010).
Anthony has taken part in festivals at Voix Nouvelles - Royaumont (Paris), Matrix '10 and '11 at the Experimental Studio (Freiburg), Domain Forget (Quebec), the IRCAM Computer Music workshops at Centre Acanthes (Metz), the National Arts Centre Composer's Program (Ottawa) and the Academie Internationale de Composition du Blanc-Mesnil (Paris). In these festivals he has had the opportunity to study with Brian Ferneyhough, Mark André, Hector Parra, Marco Stroppa, Vinko Globokar, Robert Normandeau, Detlef Heusinger, Martin Matalon, Denys Bouliane and Poul Ruders among others.
Also involved with music for contemporary dance, Tan has written for the Merce Cunningham School (New York), Tangente (Montreal), and Ephemeral Industry (Calgary) and most recently for the Bravo!FACT dance movies commissions.
As a composer for mixed, instrumental, and electronic media, Anthony Tan draws upon past experiences as a club DJ, studies in the biological sciences, and interest in eastern metaphysics as artistic influence. Further, the interplay between poetic intent and musical structure becomes a central theme in his work. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in composition at McGill University in Montreal, under the supervision of John Rea, Sean Ferguson, and Steven McAdams. Other mentors have included Philippe Leroux, Chris Paul Harman, Allan Bell, David Eagle, and Hope Lee.
