Title: Re:Pose
Performer: Toca Loca
Instrumentation: Two Pianos, Percussion and electronics
Premier Performance: March 4, 2010. Montreal, Canada
Program Notes: Re:Pose is a work based on musical “postures”. A posture is a configuration of the human body that is motionless. One may describe a posture as having energy, line, and force even though it is static. Furthermore, postures can convey meaning such as lethargy or aggressiveness or may be symbolic such as kneeling during prayer or the postures in yoga. Thus, this work is an exploration in how a physical posture can be applied to musical parameters and, at the same time, convey meaning. As a specific musical posture is presented I take various “points of view” revealing the posture through different angles and lighting. Furthermore, another concept that emerged in my work was postural equipoise. This is a posture that reaches a state of balance through the opposition of forces. Thus, musically I explored the opposition between the forces of movement and stillness, sound and silence, progression and stasis, agitation and repose.

Title: Unravel (2009)
Performer: Donovan Seidle, Rubbing Stone Ensemble
Instrumentation: Electric Violin, Ondes Martenot Samples, Live electronics
Premier Performance: January 2009, Calgary, Canada
Program Notes: The instrumentation for this work is a statement on the continuum of technology. The use of the electric violin, a modern development of an ancient instrument juxtaposed to the sounds of a historic analog electronic instrument, the Ondes Martenot, creates a tension between what we perceive as being old or ancient with that which is new and a sign of progress.

Title: Per/Cycle (2008)
Instrumentation: Stereo File
Premier Performance: Montreal, Canada
Program Notes: Per/Cycle was written for a dance production with choreography by Rebecca Halls. The dance incorporated hula hoops as a metaphorical prop for the cycles that occur in and around us. The music was designed to invoke these cycles, as well as the centre of all cycles. It also deals with the perception of deceleration. All sound files were derived from a Tibetan singing bowl as well as a physically modelled Tibetan singing bowl.

Title: ...then time killed the wind... (2008)
Performer: McGill Percussion Ensemble
Instrumentation: Percussion Quartet and live electronics
Premier Performance: Montreal, Canada
Program Notes: This work was the first foray into an exploration in the use of genetic structures as models for music composition. I derived a four cell rhythmic sequence from a genetic sequence found in mice. This sequence was found to be associated with the physiological effects of music. My goal was to see if the use of this genetic information structure could transfer some aspect of its function to the listener.

Title: Jeux d'ombres. (2007)
Performer: Erika Donald, cello and Melina Stinson, dance
Instrumentation: Cello, Live electronics and dancer
Premier Performance: Montreal, Canada
Program Notes: A collaborative project between choreographer and dancer, Melina Stinson, and cellist, Erika Donald. This was an initial exploration into embodied music cognition whereby the body acts as a mediator between sound and the cognitive patterns that emerge in the mind. We explored the relationships between the movements of the cellist, dancer, and electronics sounds.
